Angus is an area of outstanding natural beauty, which captures the very essence of Scotland.
Situated on Scotland's glorious east coast, the county is home to Arbroath Abbey - the birthplace of the historic Declaration of Scottish Independence in 1320. Breathtaking mountains, magnificent glens and a rugged coastline provide the stunning backdrop to the seaside towns and market burghs of Angus today. A historic but forward looking county, the Angus economy has grown from its agricultural and seafaring origins and now supports a diverse portfolio of business including the oil industry & engineering, textiles, pharmaceuticals and advanced digital media. Angus has much to offer residents, visitors and business in an area of just 2,200 square kilometres. With a population of 108,400 (2001 census) Angus has seven main towns - Arbroath, Forfar, Montrose, Carnoustie, Kirriemuir, Brechin and Monifieth. Most of the population lives within these towns and the coastal & Strathmore areas, with the remote glens to the north of the county having a very sparse population. northern banks of the River Tay in one of Europe's most impressive geographic locations. Traditionally
famous the world over for the "three Js" - Jute, Jam & Journalism - Dundee today is a modern, vibrant
city where the future is being forged now.
Advances in medicine and the development of the digital media and entertainment industries are achievements of a city and people famed for their innovation and invention. A revitalised city centre and retail scene, the thriving Contemporary Arts centre, the impressive Ice Arena and a huge choice of leisure options symbolise a confident and optimistic city of the 21st century. Dundee styles itself as the "City of Discovery" and is named after Captain Scott's famous Antarctic exploration vessel, the RRS Discovery. Geographically at the heart of Scotland, Perth and Kinross covers an area of 2,000 square miles and is home
to 134,949 people (2001 census). The main centres of population are Perth, Blairgowrie, Crieff, Kinross and
Pitlochry.
With iron-age forts, a Roman stronghold, over fifty castles and one palace, many battlefields and the last private army in Europe, it cannot be said that the area lacks history! Glorious scenery, numerous golf courses and some of the highest mountains in Scotland make the area a haven for tourists and also one of the most sought-after places to live. While the city of Perth has undoubtedly had a long and distinguished history, there are several other towns and villages in the area of great historic importance. The former textile centres of Alyth, Blairgowrie and Rattray are now better known as soft-fruit producing areas and as gateways to the glens and mountains for walkers and skiers. Crieff, Aberfeldy and Pitlochry are long established tourist destinations, close to areas of outstanding scenic beauty. The geographically diverse nature of Perth & Kinross presents significant challenges to officers tasked with policing the area. Throughout the year they are called upon to carry out duties at various major events, most notably the annual T in the Park music festival which can attract an attendance of more than 100,000 music fans from across the country.
